Grant Us Boldness
How the Holy Spirit Makes Ordinary People Into Bold Witnesses
MANIFEST: Part Seven
Before Jesus ascended, He gave His followers a strange instruction. Not go, at least not yet. First, wait.
"Behold, I send out the promise of my Father on you. But wait in the city of Jerusalem until you are clothed with power from on high." (Luke 24:49, WEB)
The older translations say endued with power. The word underneath it is endyō, to put something on like a garment, to be dressed in it. Jesus was telling them that boldness is not something you manufacture by gritting your teeth. It is something you are clothed in. Power from on high, draped over ordinary shoulders. And until that garment came, even men who had walked with the risen Christ were told to stay put.
Then came the promise that holds this whole series together:
"But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you. You will be witnesses to me in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the uttermost parts of the earth." (Acts 1:8, WEB)
That word witnesses is the Greek martys, the root of our English word martyr. A witness, in the New Testament sense, is not someone who recites a few facts about Jesus. A witness is someone whose whole life testifies, sometimes at great cost. From the very first sentence, the Spirit's power and the call to costly witness are bound together. The Spirit doesn't come to make us comfortable. He comes to make us bold.
The Prayer That Shook the Room
If you want to see what Spirit-given boldness actually looks like, watch what the early church did the first time the world pushed back.
Peter and John had been hauled before the Sanhedrin, threatened, and ordered to stop speaking in the name of Jesus. They went back to their own people, and the whole company prayed. Now, pay close attention to what they asked for.
They did not pray, "Lord, make the threats stop." They did not pray, "Lord, keep us safe and comfortable." They prayed:
"Now, Lord, look at their threats, and grant to your servants to speak your word with all boldness, while you stretch out your hand to heal..." (Acts 4:29, WEB)
Notice the division of labor in that prayer. You stretch out Your hand to heal; the supernatural work belongs to God. Grant us boldness to speak; that's the part they took responsibility for. They asked God to do what only God can do, and they asked Him to embolden them to do what He had called them to do.
And then:
"When they had prayed, the place was shaken where they were gathered together. They were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and they spoke the word of God with boldness." (Acts 4:31, WEB)
The word for boldness here, and back in verse 29, is parrēsia. It comes from two words: pan, meaning "all," and rhēsis, meaning "speech": literally all-speech. It means total frankness. Open, unguarded, holding-nothing-back speech. The freedom to say everything, plainly, without fear of who's listening.
Hold onto that, because it tells us something most of us miss about boldness. We tend to imagine the bold Christian as the polished one with all the answers. But parrēsia is the opposite of polish. It is the freedom to be completely open, including open about your own need, your own struggle, your own story. The room shook, and what poured out wasn't impressive religious performance. It was unguarded, honest, all-out witness.
The Two Hands of Boldness
Here is the pattern I want you to see, because it runs through the entire book of Acts: boldness has a natural hand and a supernatural hand, and the Spirit works through both.
There is the natural dynamic: you actually open your mouth, you go a little out of your way, you ask the question, you tell the truth about Jesus. And there is the supernatural dynamic: God opens hearts, orchestrates encounters, sends signs, falls on people in power. In Acts 4, God amplified their natural boldness and released His supernatural power. Both hands. Every time.
Mark's Gospel summarizes the whole apostolic mission in exactly this two-handed way:
"They went out, and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word by the signs that followed." (Mark 16:20, WEB)
They preached. The Lord worked with them. Watch for both hands in the stories that follow.
Philip and the Chariot: How One "Yes" Started a Nation's Church
Philip was in the middle of a thriving revival in Samaria when the Spirit pulled him out of it and sent him to a desert road. There, a chariot was passing, and in it sat a court official of the Candace, queen of the Ethiopians, the man in charge of all her treasure, reading the prophet Isaiah and not understanding a word.
"The Spirit said to Philip, 'Go near, and join yourself to this chariot.'" (Acts 8:29, WEB)
There it is: the supernatural hand. A whisper. Go near. And then the natural hand: Philip jogs up alongside a moving chariot and does the simplest, most repeatable thing in all of evangelism. He asks a question. "Do you understand what you're reading?" That single question opened a door that changed history. Philip explained that the suffering servant Isaiah described was Jesus, the eunuch believed, and he was baptized on the spot, after which the Spirit of the Lord caught Philip away, and the official went on his way rejoicing.
Now here is the part worth sitting with. That man got back in his chariot and went home. And according to the oldest traditions of the church (recorded by Irenaeus as early as AD 180, and echoed by Eusebius, who called the eunuch the "first fruits" of the faith in all the world), he carried the gospel home with him. Ethiopia became one of the oldest Christian nations on the face of the earth, with a faith that, by some reckonings, took root before Christianity reached much of Europe. The Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church still stands today as one of the most ancient living churches in the world, and it traces its first seed back to that one man, on that one road, reading that one scroll, because Philip was willing to obey a whisper and ask a stranger a question.
One divinely orchestrated conversation. One person of influence. An entire nation's faith. That is what the Spirit can do with a single "yes."
Lydia: The Heart God Opens
Across the empire, Paul is sitting by a river outside Philippi, talking to a group of women. One of them is Lydia, a successful businesswoman, a seller of purple cloth. And Luke records something we could easily skim right past:
"The Lord opened her heart to listen to the things which were spoken by Paul." (Acts 16:14, WEB)
Paul spoke. That's the natural hand. But the opening of Lydia's heart was the Spirit's work entirely. Paul could not pry that heart open with the most brilliant argument in the world. God did it. And the moment her heart was opened, she believed, and her whole household came to faith with her.
This is enormously freeing for the witness. You are not responsible for opening anyone's heart; you cannot, and you were never asked to. Your job is to be present, to be open, to speak. God's job is the heart. And learning to discern where He is already at work, whose heart He is opening, is how you learn where to spend your energy. You'll feel it. A conversation that suddenly goes deeper than it should. A stranger who keeps asking questions. That's not coincidence. That's an open heart. Lean in.
The Macedonian Call: When God Redirects the Mission
Sometimes the Spirit's leading comes as a closed door before it comes as an open one. On Paul's second journey, the Spirit actually forbade him to preach the word in Asia, and then would not allow him to enter Bithynia (Acts 16:6–7). Two doors, shut by God Himself. Paul must have been bewildered. And then, in the night:
"A vision appeared to Paul in the night. There was a man of Macedonia standing, begging him, and saying, 'Come over into Macedonia and help us.'" (Acts 16:9, WEB)
"When he had seen the vision, immediately we sought to go out to Macedonia, concluding that the Lord had called us to preach the Good News to them." (Acts 16:10, WEB)
That redirection carried the gospel across the sea into Europe for the very first time. Notice again the two hands: the supernatural vision, and then the natural reasoning, concluding that the Lord was calling them. God gave the dream; Paul did the discerning. The closed doors weren't God being absent. They were God being strategic, steering His witnesses toward the field He had already prepared.
Peter: The Whisper Behind the Vision
Then there is Peter, on a rooftop in Joppa, who falls into a trance and sees a sheet lowered from heaven full of unclean animals and a voice telling him to eat. Dramatic, supernatural, unmistakable. But the vision alone didn't send him anywhere. What moved his feet was a whisper:
"While Peter was pondering the vision, the Spirit said to him, 'Behold, three men seek you. But arise, get down, and go with them, doubting nothing; for I have sent them.'" (Acts 10:19–20, WEB)
Peter went, walked into the house of a Roman centurion named Cornelius, and preached. And while he was still speaking, the Holy Spirit fell on everyone listening (Acts 10:44), and the door of the gospel swung open to the entire Gentile world.
Vision, whisper, trance, open heart, closed door, sudden outpouring: the methods vary wildly. But the point is always the same: God is directing the advance of the gospel to new people and new places. That is the work He has poured His power upon us to accomplish.
Most of It Is Ordinary, and That's the Point
I want to say something honest here, especially to those of us in the charismatic stream of the church. We love the phenomenon stories. We retell the trances and the angels and the Spirit catching Philip away, and we should. Those things were real, and they still happen. But if we're not careful, we start to believe that real boldness only counts when it's spectacular. And so we wait for a vision before we'll talk to our neighbor.
The truth is that the overwhelming majority of the Christian life is the practical boldness. It's the question Philip asked. It's Paul talking to women by a river. It's you, going a little out of your way. Some people will resist; some will respond. You won't always feel the room shake. And that's exactly why we need perseverance, because we know that woven into all the ordinary days, there will be that one moment. There will be a Lydia whose heart God has already opened. There will be a divinely appointed season, a field He sets in front of you and says, Go, this one's for you. But you only find those moments by being faithful in the ordinary ones.
So here is the practical challenge I want to leave you with, the simplest thing in this entire message: go out of your way, and be open about your own struggles. That's it. Ask the question. Be honest about your pain. Remember, parrēsia, all-speech, nothing held back. You are surrounded by hurting people; many of you are carrying your own pain right now. When you stop hiding it, and you go a little out of your way to love someone, you will create more ministry opportunities than you have time for. I promise you that. The Spirit will do the rest: He'll open the hearts, orchestrate the moments, and confirm the word. Your part is to be clothed with power, and then to be willing.
Comfort is the enemy of witness. Boldness is the friend of it. And the same Spirit who shook that room is ready to clothe you.
Let's Pray
God, give us a supernatural impartation of boldness; clothe us, as You promised, with power from on high.
Bring us the Lydias, whose hearts You have already opened to hear.
Show us the divinely appointed regions and places, the fields where You say, Go, this one is for you to reap.
Give us the precise people of influence, the Ethiopian on the road home, whose single conversion can seed the faith of a whole nation.
We are not asking You to take away the threats or the discomfort. We are asking, like Your church in Jerusalem, for one thing: grant to Your servants to speak Your word with all boldness, while You stretch out Your hand.
