From the Stands to the Field: It’s Time to Get in the Game
Have you ever cheered from the stands so loudly it felt like your whole being was on the line — and then wondered, What if I’m meant to be out there? While praying for our spiritual family, I saw a clear picture: a church full of spectators, applauding and hoping, until people rise, dash down the stairs, and step onto the field. Those who’d already been playing, tired but faithful, move to the sideline—not to disappear, but to coach, mentor, and fuel the next wave.
The Spirit’s invitation is simple: stop spectating. Start serving. Move from consumer to contributor. The church advances not as an audience but as a team.
Why This Matters
Ephesians 4 makes the point plain: Christ gives gifts to each of us so the whole body can be equipped and built up. The goal isn’t a small band of professionals carrying everyone else. When every believer uses God-given gifts, the church flourishes. When people sit on the bench, the team underperforms. When we play, the entire body gains strength, function, and life.
What “Getting In The Game” Looks Like
Diverse gifts matter: Spiritual gifts (teaching, prayer, prophecy, healing) and practical gifts (hospitality, administration, music, generosity) all build the church when used to bless others.
Everyday skills count: Finance, organization, cooking, and hospitality are kingdom service when offered to God—no label required.
Real-time impact: Your participation and prayers bring immediate comfort, clarity, encouragement, and sometimes healing.
Recognize God’s stirrings: Physical or emotional responses—warm hands, sudden words, tears, or joy—can be signs the Spirit is activating you.
Coach to multiply: Those who’ve run hard move to the sideline to mentor and empower others, multiplying service rather than replacing it.
Who Is Being Invited
People who have only ever cheered from the stands and sense this may be for them.
Those already serving who feel called to lead or equip.
Faithful small-scale servants ready for wider influence.
Anyone who thinks their gifting is too ordinary—your ordinary may be exactly what someone needs.
A Simple Framework To Move From Bench To Field
Notice the nudge. Pay attention to recurring convictions during worship, prayer, or Scripture.
Take a small step. Sign up, attend a training, ask a leader for a short assignment, or volunteer for one task this month. Momentum builds with small actions.
Pray for activation. Ask God to awaken the gifts He’s placed in you and to show your place on the team.
Seek coaching. Find someone seasoned to mentor you and shorten your learning curve.
Multiply. As you grow, invest in one person and help them step in.
A Short Activation Prayer
Lord, show me where I belong on Your team. Activate the gifts You’ve given me—spiritual and natural—and give me bold faith for this assignment. Use my hands, feet, and voice for Your purposes. Make me a builder of people and of Your church. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Practical Steps For This Week
Decide in your heart: say yes to being a player.
Commit to one serving step: sign up, email a leader, attend a training, or join a team.
If you’ve been serving, offer to coach one newer person.
Start a daily, brief prayer: “God, show me my role and give me courage to step into it.”
A Final Word
Imagine a congregation that refuses to merely watch: people running onto the field with joy and purpose, experienced hands guiding new players, a church functioning as Paul described—every part active, every gift used, the whole body growing. This isn’t a distant dream; it’s today’s invitation.
Will you get in the game? The field is ready. Take your place. Run. Coach. Serve. The team is waiting, and your move matters.
